A scary scene during Rockies/Pirates game

24 May 2016

Pirates: 3B Jung Ho Kang was held out of the starting lineup for the second consecutive day with a left hand injury.

Jordan Lyles started today's makeup game and his rough 2016 season continued as he allowed six runs, four earned, in just 2 1/3 innings of work, walking three and striking out three. Colorado Rockies catcher Tony Wolters, left, tags out Pittsburgh Pirates' Francisco Cervelli who was attempting to score on a fielder's choice by Sean Rodriguez during the third inning of a baseball game in Pittsburgh, Monday...

Ryan Vogelsong being hit by the pitch happened somewhat ironically, as seconds before the incident took place one of the announcers asked the other "what do you do is you're Lyles - the opposing pitcher - here?" Lyles was taken out after Ryan Vogelsong was hit by the pitch, and only pitched 2.1 innings in total. He finished as the losing pitcher as the Pirates recorded a 6-3 decision in a game that was rescheduled after a Sunday washout.

After Ryan Vogelsong was hit by the pitch, he flopped down while clutching his face and didn't move very much. He also notched up a base hit in his first Major League Baseball at-bat and netted his first RBI.

Lefty Chris Rusin relieved Lyles and allowed a bloop single to Pirates reliever Wilfredo Boscan to bring in another run, making it 6-0 for Pittsburgh when the third inning finally came to an end.

Colorado made things interesting in the ninth with singles by Carlos Gonzalez, Reynolds and Gerardo Parra and a sacrifice fly by DJ LeMahieu. "But then he lost some command and got in bad counts", said manager Walt Weiss, who saw his team fall to 2-4 on the current nine-game road trip.

"I think the pause will actually help him", Hurdle said.

No update is expected until Tuesday. His only real shaky inning was the fifth, when he gave up the two runs, balked and threw five balls.
