Champions Chelsea reduced to nine and beaten 3-2 by Burnley — Watch

13 Agosto 2017

Premier League football champions Chelsea suffered an embarrassing home defeat on the first Saturday of the new season, having two men sent off as unfancied Burnley beat them 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.

Cahill was sent off by referee Craig Pawson after only 14 minutes when he ended Steven Defour's run with a high tackle that was clumsy rather malicious.

And finally, Ronald Koeman and his band of new Everton signing's host Stoke City on Merseyside, looking to get off to a good start in their pursuit of breaking into the top six.

It was a dispiriting afternoon for Conte, who won the title in his first season at the club but has complained that Chelsea have not signed enough new players while allowing several to leave.

"In the second half we changed totally the situation and tried to attack in the right way".

Mourinho had been unhappy with Petr Cech's transfer to Arsenal that summer and wanted to strengthen in a number of positions. The Brazilian curled an exquisite 69th-minute cross into space behind the Burnley defence and substitute Morata stooped to guide a diving header past Heaton, just nine minutes after coming on.

"We're proud of our second half, we fought well and we know we had made it difficult for ourselves in the first half".

"After the red card [to Cahill] we lost our composure and conceded three goals".

"Why do I have to send a message? Why?" Here, these should keep you going until Match of the Day. We have huge players with lots of talent. Blues fans will be worried that this is an omen of things to come, as their side appeared a shadow of the team who stormed to the league title last season.

Alvaro Morata made his Stamford Bridge debut for the ineffective Michy Batshuayi just before the hour mark, and it was his introduction that seemed to turn the tide in favour of the home side.

"The red card was a key moment".

The Blues bagged a second goal in the 87th minute as Morata's knock-on found David Luiz, who volleyed home from six-yards out.

Debutant Ahmed Hegazi's first-half header earned West Bromwich Albion a 1-0 win over Bournemouth, while Mauricio Pellegrino's tenure as Southampton manager began with a 0-0 draw at home to Swansea City. Cahill challenged for the ball with one foot, but his studs were showing, prompting Pawson to dismiss the Chelsea captain.
