The 2018 MLB Season Will Have the Earliest Opening Day Ever

13 Setiembre 2017

The schedule also features one series to be played outside the United States mainland, as the Minnesota Twins and Indians will face off at Hiram Bithorn Stadium in San Juan, Puerto Rico on April 17-18.

March 29 also will represent the earliest start to a Major League season, excluding special international events.

The early start date stems from a provision in the new collective bargaining agreement that calls for three to four additional off days to be spread throughout the season. Also interesting is the fact that the teams with the six best records (as of September 12th) in the American League all open on the road, meaning that if one of these AL teams wins the World Series, they won't begin the 2018 season in front of their hometown fans. Basically, the regular season's earlier opening replaces the last four days of spring training - a period when most teams are playing exhibition games against other MLB teams at home or away (like the Toronto Blue Jays playing in Montreal) or playing those final few games before breaking camp. Players will continue to be credited with a full year of service for accruing 172 service days over 187 days, rather than 183.

Nine games are scheduled for Friday, March 30; a full slate of 15 games is scheduled for Saturday, March 31; and the opening weekend closes on Sunday, April 1, with 12 contests.

Another big change will come just after the All-Star break, when two of the game's fiercest rivals, the Cubs and Cardinals, will square off on July 19.

Less than 15,000 people total attended the three games. This is thought to be one of the first completely free standalone games in MLB history.

Major League Baseball announced its master schedule for the 2018 season.

Clubs are either starting to accept season ticket deposits or will do so soon, so check individual club sites for details.

Scheduled to be held in Tampa Bay between Sept. 11 and 13, the series will instead be held at Citi Field in New York. The schedule is subject to change.
